Walking onto a Premier League pitch to present the end-of-season silverware is an honour reserved for a select few. In June, Emmanuel Nmecha, a striker for North London United, stepped out in front of a packed stadium to hand out the Premier League medals and trophy to the Arsenal squad.
Emmanuel has been playing for North London United (NLU) since its inception. Founded in 2013, NLU is a dedicated multi-award-winning football club created specifically for children and young adults with Down syndrome, offering tailored weekly training sessions that focus on physical development, skill-building, and social inclusion.
Through NLU’s long-standing partnership with Arsenal in the community, the team trains regularly at the Arsenal Hub facility right next to the Emirates Stadium. It was through this connection that Emmanuel first became a fan.

“I don’t get to go to matches very often, but when I get the opportunity, I always enjoy going. Arsenal has become very special to me through North London United."
Emmanuel is already well-known to the Arsenal first team. He previously interviewed manager Mikel Arteta for TNT Sports, and, earlier this season, he visited the training ground to wish the players "all the best in the Premier League title race."
When the invitation arrived to anchor the official trophy presentation, Emmanuel was thrilled: "It felt amazing. It was a big moment to be part of the trophy lift and something I never imagined I would do. I was excited and proud, but not nervous. It was a day I will never forget," he said.
The afternoon featured plenty of high-profile moments, including a warm hug from Mikel during the medal lineup. But Emmanuel’s favourite part of the day was the climax of the ceremony: "handing the trophy to Martin Ødegaard and then watching the team lift it. The crowd was so loud and the celebrations were amazing."
While the Premier League ceremony is a major milestone, Emmanuel is already an experienced international athlete and is looking forward to competing in an international tournament in Mexico, in September. He also represented NLU at the Special Olympics in Belgium in 2024. "I enjoy playing football, keeping active and being part of the team," Emmanuel said. "My favourite thing is meeting nice people, having fun and having a laugh with my teammates."
