The Access All Areas in Labs project is about making laboratories more accessible for disabled scientists. It addresses the challenges they face in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) fields, where their representation remains low. The project surveyed 152 scientists, more than half of whom are disabled, to identify practical solutions for improving lab accessibility, with a focus on inclusive design and kit that works for everyone.
The project has two objectives: first, to investigate the experiences of disabled individuals working in labs, examining access barriers and potential solutions; second is to identify and implement access solutions in pharmaceutical labs, ensuring they align with the Principles of Universal Design.
The findings will be developed into guidelines for NHS and academic research, aiming to make labs more inclusive while also providing advice to contractors on selecting lab equipment and designing lab spaces that enhance the experience of disabled scientists.
The results will soon be published in a peer-reviewed journal, ensuring that all scientists can thrive in labs.
