Driving
As an entry-level EV, the ë-C3 won't win any prizes for electric range or power, but you wouldn't expect that anyway. The 43.7kWh battery is good for an expected range of 199 miles, but in real-world conditions you're more likely to get up to 170 miles, which is respectable in supermini company. Efficiency isn't comparable to premium electric cars, but you can charge from 20 to 80 per cent in 26 minutes with a 100kW fast-charger. 111bhp means you won't break any performance records either, with a 0-62mph time of 10.4 seconds. Still, the throttle pedal is smooth and well calibrated, so drivers new to EVs won't be spooked under acceleration.
Soft suspension, and an elevated ride height compared to other superminis, means the ë-C3 is comfortable to drive, but there's noticeable body roll in tight corners. However, the ë-C3 isn't advertised as a hot-hatch and does well as a quiet, easy-to-drive vehicle in and around town, and is assured enough to whisk along motorways without a fuss.
Interior
Inside, the ë-C3 blends practicality with a dash of Citroën verve. A funky dash has fabric detailing to distract from the hard plastics that this type of vehicle often has, and there's gloss detailing around the drive selector, too. The digital driver's display atop the dash has a retro-futuristic vibe and information is presented clearly. Plus, there's a 10.3in digital display in the centre of the dash, with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay smartphone connectivity, which isn't as efficient as systems on more expensive cars, but is practical and well positioned.
A huge plus point is the physical controls for the air-conditioning. They're low down and a stretch to reach, but a welcome inclusion over being buried within a digital interface. A high driving position combined with tall windows and narrow pillars provides the ë-C3 with strong all-around visibility, plus there's rear parking sensors as standard. A small, near-rectangular steering wheel is something to watch out for, as it could prove uncomfortable for some drivers. It wouldn't be a Citroën without quirks, and the armrests on each door have fabric tags with chirpy phrases like 'have fun' and 'be cool'.
Space and practicality
The tall-bodied ë-C3 means it really shines in the supermini sector when it comes to cabin space. Its raised profile means you won't have to fold yourself in half to get in. Tall passengers can sit comfortably in the front and rear, thanks to plentiful head and legroom.
The 310 litre boot is also competitive for this class of car, but there's a sizable lip, approximately 240mm from the floor for you to heft items over. We had to fold two rear seats to fit our TGA Whill R mobility scooter, but the rear bench doesn't fold flush to the boot floor, so bear that in mind. While the deep boot could provide complications for some, it does mean the ë-C3 can comfortably gobble up your weekly shop, or up to five carry-on suitcases.
Equipment
The ë-C3 comes in just two trims, so you won't get lost in comparing multiple specifications. The entry-level Plus model includes the infotainment screen, manual air-conditioning and rear parking sensors as standard. If you go for the range-topping Max, you'll get automatic climate control, wireless phone-charging, a rear-view camera, electric rear windows, electric folding and heated door mirrors.
