How to choose a scooter or powered wheelchair

Choosing or upgrading your powered wheelchair or scooter can improve your daily life, helping you stay mobile and independent. But signing up for a three-year lease is a big commitment, so it's important to find the right fit. Here are some useful tips...

Think about your needs

Ask yourself:

  • How does your disability affect your day-to-day life?
  • Are there any recent or expected changes to your condition or lifestyle coming up, such as moving home?
  • What daily challenges could the right equipment help you with?

Being clear about your needs helps you choose the right product.

Everyday questions

Think about how and where you will use your wheelchair or scooter:

  • Do you mostly travel on pavements, roads or public transport?
  • How often and how far do you usually travel?
  • Will you need it to be easy to transport or store?
  • Have you got a safe place to keep and charge it?

Talking to your dealer

Your dealer can guide you to the best choice. Ask them:

  • Can I test several models?
  • Which scooter or wheelchair best fits my mobility needs over the next three years?
  • What special features or adjustments can you offer?

Always take your time and speak up if it doesn't feel right.

Keeping your product in good shape

Regular care prevents breakdowns. Ask:

  • What regular checks and care will my product need?
  • What should I do if I get a puncture or mechanical problem?
  • How can I keep the battery in good condition?

Your dealer can share useful tips, such as fully charging the battery after every use.

Insurance knowledge

Understand your coverage clearly. Ask:

  • What does my insurance include?
  • What do I do if there's an accident or breakdown?
  • Can I travel abroad, and does insurance cover that?

End of your lease

To avoid disruption, ask your dealer:

  • What do I need to do at lease end?
  • How do I choose my next scooter or powered wheelchair?

Know your responsibilities

Your Motability Scheme lease includes insurance, breakdown recovery and routine repairs. Remember, you'll need to pay for things such as insurance excess or cosmetic repairs. Asking your dealer the right questions now will help you choose the right scooter or wheelchair that keeps you moving comfortably and independently for the next three years.
