Turning a passion for crochet into a fashion label

Daniela Clave shares how she took up crochet after developing chronic fatigue syndrome and long Covid, and transformed her hobby into a slow-fashion business

Daniela Clave began crocheting to relax and improve her concentration, after being diagnosed with long Covid and chronic fatigue syndrome. This quickly turned into a passion, and led to her setting up her online boutique Lady of Loops.

“What began as a creative project during my diagnosis has grown into a small, flexible brand that blends design, mindfulness and community,” says Daniela. “It was a very difficult time – accepting that overnight you can no longer do what you once could – but creativity helped me rebuild my sense of identity and purpose at my own pace.”

Prior to her diagnoses, Daniela had a career in law that required long periods of focus and precision. Eventually, she had to step back to focus on her health.

“Crocheting gave me purpose, structure, and something positive to focus on. “Over time, it grew into Lady of Loops – a boutique I could manage around my health and energy levels.” The label offers a range of handmade crochet products, such as jumpers and bags, as well as a select number of second-hand designer finds.

Daniela recently opened her own stall at Macclesfield Market Hall, where she sells her Lady of Loops products. As well as having her own hand-made items on offer, Daniela also teaches crochet from her stall. These sessions are designed to be calm and sensory-aware, and aim to help learners build confidence.

Being the designer and founder behind Lady of Loops means that Daniela is able to structure the business to suit her needs. “Because I also experience chronic wrist pain and fatigue, I work slowly and rely on my family’s help with day-to-day activities and the practical side of the business,” she explains.
