Travel coverage explained

Your Motability Scheme lease includes RAC European Breakdown Cover, meaning help is always close at hand if you encounter any issues. The RAC will aim to repair your car at the roadside, or tow it to the nearest garage, if necessary. However, since coverage specifics can vary by country, it’s a good idea to confirm these details before you set off on your trip.

Longer adventures

You can take your Motability Scheme vehicle overseas for up to 90 days within any 12–month period. If you intend to travel for longer, you will require written permission from us. Request this at least three weeks in advance to ensure you have the necessary approvals in place. Remember, your Scheme vehicle cannot remain abroad for periods exceeding 12 months.

The VE103 certificate

Whether heading to the continent or just across to Ireland, you must carry a Vehicle on Hire certificate, known as a VE103. This essential document proves you are authorised to drive your leased vehicle abroad. Arrange your VE103 by contacting the RAC directly on 0800 731 3310. Please allow at least two weeks for it to arrive before your departure.

Handling breakdowns

If your car breaks down during your travels, RAC support will quickly come to your aid. Should repair costs exceed £500 and your vehicle remains economically repairable, you also have the option to transport your car back to the UK for repairs. It’s important to know that minor repairs or replacements, such as tyres, might initially need to be paid for by you. These costs can usually be reclaimed when you return to the UK, just be sure to keep all receipts and paperwork.

Important documents and equipment

Preparation can make your trip abroad significantly smoother. Here's a checklist of essential items to pack:

  • Valid driving licence and National Insurance number.
  • Vehicle insurance documents.
  • Passport.
  • VE103 certificate.
  • Breakdown cover details.
  • Travel insurance paperwork.
  • European Accident Statement form (which can be useful in case of incidents).

You should also check local driving regulations for your destination, as required equipment can vary. Essentials often include reflective jackets, warning triangles, UK stickers, headlamp beam adjusters, and even first aid kits in some countries like Austria, France, and Germany.

Tips for safely driving abroad

  • At night, adjust your headlights appropriately to avoid dazzling oncoming drivers.
  • Display your UK sticker clearly on your car, this is especially crucial in countries such as Spain, Cyprus and Malta.
  • Keep coins close by for toll roads and parking.
  • Take regular breaks from driving on long journeys to maintain alertness.
  • Always familiarise yourself before you leave and comply with local traffic rules and customs.

With these practical tips and essentials covered, you’re all set for an exciting motoring adventure abroad. Enjoy every mile of your travels.
