Powered winches help save a lot of effort. With a few simple habits, you can keep yours running smoothly.
1. Keep a gentle pull
Keep light tension on the belt when unwinding. If it goes slack, it can fold or overlap on the drum. A steady tension helps the belt feed evenly, reduces the risk of twists and prevents the belt from gathering inside the drum. This habit helps protect the winch.
2. Only unwind what you need
Pull out just enough belt to attach securely. Leaving excess loose on the ground makes tangles more likely and can create a trip hazard.
3. Clip on correctly
Attach the belt to the wheelchair frame - never to footrests and check the hook is secure. Make sure the belt is lying flat.
4. Let the winch do the work
As the winch pulls the wheelchair up the ramp, steer gently and guide the chair straight. The winch is there to take the strain, so there's no need to push hard. When winding back in, watch the belt feed onto the drum. Pause if you see a twist and smooth it out before carrying on.
5. Don't force it
If the winch stops or jams, avoid pushing or pulling against it. Stop, release the tension carefully and make sure the belt is lying flat before continuing. If you cannot free the winch, get help, as forcing it could cause permanent damage.
6. Safety first
Always keep the belt taut to avoid snagging. If the belt becomes twisted or jammed and the winch is operated, it could cause permanent damage. Stop immediately, release the tension and straighten the belt. If you can't undo a jam or twist, contact your vehicle converter for advice; they may be able to arrange for an engineer to help. In an emergency, you can seek assistance from the RAC.
