What best practices would you advise when choosing new WAVs and wheelchairs/scooters?

I recommend contacting your converter as soon as possible to discuss your wheelchair/scooter change. They will be able to confirm whether your new choice is compatible with the vehicle or if any modifications are needed. If changes are required, this could mean being without your vehicle for a while, or potentially without your wheelchair, so speaking to the converter early is vital. It may also be worth delaying the vehicle handover until you have received your new wheelchair, to ensure they are suitable.

What advice would you give for the best converter experience when getting a WAV?

Familiarise yourself with the WAVs available on the Motability Scheme website and the range of vehicles on offer. Consider how the vehicle will be funded, as you may need a grant. The Motability Foundation can discuss your needs and available support with you. It's also important to think about how many people usually travel with you, who will be driving, and what equipment you need to transport. This will help determine the right vehicle size. Once you've chosen a vehicle and submitted an application, being flexible on colour choice can help reduce lead times.

What information should I have ready for the converter to ensure I get the right product for my needs?

Knowing the make, model and size of your wheelchair is essential, and measurements such as your seated height. Where you sit in the WAV- the middle row or rear is also important. This affects both ride comfort and how well you can interact with other passengers.

How will converters guide me through the WAV selection process?

Converters will use details about your wheelchair, budget, passengers and any equipment you need to recommend a vehicle. If you receive a grant from the Motability Foundation, they may do a pre-qualification to confirm the required vehicle size. They will then advise on a range of suitable vehicles and give details of converters who supply them. You can then contact the converter to discuss the pre-qualified options and arrange a vehicle demonstration, allowing you to check the vehicle will meet your needs.
