No one likes going to the dentist, but for people with learning disabilities the experience can be even more challenging.
A ground-breaking initiative called Caring Beyond Words, led by the University of Plymouth and funded by the National Institute for Health and Care Research, aims to transform dental care for people with learning disabilities and remove barriers to access.
The project actively involves individuals with learning disabilities, their families and their carers in co-designing solutions, working in partnership with Learning Disability England and the Cornwall Partnership NHS Foundation Trust.
Project lead Professor Mona Nasser highlights the need for a personalised approach. "Our hope is that we can find solutions that improve patient experience and can be incorporated into current and future dental practice," she says.
