YOU WILL NEED

  • A glass storage jar, approx 30cm high, with a cork lid
  • Houseplants
  • Cushion moss
  • Activated charcoal
  • Alpine gravel
  • Houseplant compost
  • Decorative quartz or pebbles
  • Radiator paintbrush
  • Ruler

STEP 1

Pour and level a 1cm layer of alpine gravel into the base of a jar. Then sprinkle activated charcoal onto the gravel.

STEP 2

Pour a 5-7cm layer of sterile houseplant compost and use a radiator paintbrush to clean any soil from the sides of the glass jar.

STEP 3

Some plants need to be divided prior to being planted, such as fittonia (above). So research the plants you pick.

STEP 4

Using a cork attached to a baton, make a hole ready for your first plant.

STEP 5

Recommended plants for a terrarium include calathea, fittonia and ivy. Start planting and firm everything in with the cork.

STEP 6

Break up a cushion of moss into pieces and fit it around the different plants in the jar.

STEP 7

Brush away any earth from the sides and finish off by decorating with pebbles and quartz stones. Water lightly.
